Since the beginning of this year, the Guanhe Port Area of Lianyungang Port has been leveraging its sea-river intermodal advantages to drive robust opening-up and development. Data show that foreign trade cargo throughput at the Yanwei Operation Zone of the Guanhe Port Area surged 173 percent year-on-year in the first three quarters, emerging as a new growth highlight for the city’s open economy.

As a key southern wing port area of Lianyungang Port and a major hub for sea-river intermodal transport, the Guanhe Port Area has been capitalizing on its strategic location along the Guanhe waterway, which connects the inland river network to the open sea, to continuously unlock the dividends of its infrastructure. The Guanhe 50,000-tonne waterway has recently been completed and opened to navigation, and the Phase III terminal project at the Yanwei Operation Zone has been finished, adding two new 50,000-tonne general-purpose berths. These developments have effectively addressed the port's capacity shortfall and laid a solid hardware foundation for large-scale foreign trade cargo transport.

Meanwhile, the port area has been cultivating its specialty in break-bulk cargo operations, tailoring customized handling plans for each vessel under a “one-ship, one-strategy” approach and coordinating production, safety, and loading and unloading processes. The range of foreign trade cargo categories has continued to expand, covering vehicles, heavy equipment, steel, ton-bags, fertilizers, timber, and more. In August this year, the Yanwei Operation Zone achieved the simultaneous berthing of four foreign trade vessels, with four operating lines running at full capacity. Foreign trade import and export volume for the month exceeded 110,000 tonnes, up 43 percent year-on-year. In the first three quarters, break-bulk cargo throughput at the Yanwei Operation Zone rose 18.3 percent year-on-year, and vehicle exports grew 15.52 percent year-on-year. The growing influence of its break-bulk foreign trade brand has provided strong support for Lianyungang Port’s multi-port-area coordinated development strategy.

“Leveraging the advantages of the 50,000-tonne waterway, we continue to expand foreign trade markets, optimize vessel dispatching and on-site operations, and ensure fast turnaround for foreign trade vessels. Our efficient handling services support the development of port-adjacent industries and contribute to the upgrading of the region’s export-oriented economy,” said Dong, Executive Deputy General Manager of Jiangsu Xinlonggang Port Co., Ltd. Dong added that the Guanhe Port Area is steadily unlocking the potential of its sea-river intermodal corridor, with the port and port-adjacent industries empowering each other and continuously injecting new momentum into Lianyungang Port’s opening-up. Looking ahead, the company plans to further tap sea-river intermodal potential, steadily expand foreign trade cargo sources, and go all out to achieve its annual production and business targets.
