At the beginning of the new year, Lianyungang Port has delivered impressive results in its sea-river combined transport business. From January to February, the port’s sea-river combined transport volume and efficiency both increased, with a cumulative cargo throughput of 4.3832 million tons, marking a year-on-year growth of 20.9%. Among them, the core inland hub, Xinyuntai Terminal Company, achieved a breakthrough against the odds, handling 921,800 tons of cargo in February, a year-on-year increase of 51.71%, setting a new record for the same period in history.
February coincided with the Lunar New Year holiday, which brought multiple challenges such as staff shortages, immense pressure on equipment turnover, and a concentrated arrival of vessels, posing significant pressure on terminal operations. Facing these challenges, Lianyungang Port promoted production and operations to a new level through scientific planning and proactive command.
The cargo mix continued to optimize, with the pulling effect of core cargo types becoming prominent. Xinyuntai Terminal Company focused on key cargo categories, precisely meeting market demands, and achieving coordinated development of both bulk and container businesses. Among them, iron ore throughput reached 516,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 126.81%, strongly driving the terminal’s overall volume upward. The container business experienced explosive growth, with a monthly throughput of 6,295 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 176.9%, demonstrating strong development resilience and vitality, and highlighting the solid foundation for the terminal’s diversified development.
“To enhance production organization efficiency, the company actively strengthened coordination with the seaport, freight forwarders, and other parties, establishing a regular communication mechanism, proactively aligning holiday operation schedules, and sharing real-time vessel movements and cargo information in a timely manner. This ensured efficient turnover of vehicles, vessels, and cargo, effectively reducing vessel waiting times at the port,” said Song, Deputy General Manager of Xinyuntai Terminal Company.
To ensure orderly production during the holiday season, Xinyuntai Terminal made early deployments, with the marketing department responding swiftly to thoroughly investigate cargo dynamics. For core cargo types such as iron ore and laterite nickel ore, a mechanism of round-the-clock tracking, plan fulfillment, and dedicated personnel was implemented. Particularly during the Spring Festival sprint, the terminal achieved, for the first time, simultaneous stacking and loading operations for two sea vessels, successfully unloading 54,000 tons of laterite nickel ore and 57,000 tons of bauxite. This “all-for-one” collaborative approach enabled the terminal to accelerate operations during the Spring Festival period.
Looking ahead, Lianyungang Port will continue to expand the range of cargo types covered by sea-river combined transport and its geographical reach, guided by market demand. It will deepen its engagement in the cargo source market, enhance operational efficiency, actively explore multimodal transport models for various cargoes such as bulk and containers, continuously improve the multimodal transport service system, and further strengthen its functional positioning as an international hub seaport.
