Recently, the seminar on the application for heritage for the Maritime Silk Road around the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, sponsored by the Municipal Bureau of Culture and Broadcasting, was held in our city. Chinese Cultural Heritage Research Institute, Underwater Cultural Heritage Protection Center of the National Heritage Bureau, Jiangsu Cultural Heritage Bureau, experts from Hebei Institute of Cultural Research, relevant leaders and cultural exposition workers from Huanghua City, Dongying City, Penglai City and Lianyungang City, attended the meeting. Before the meeting, in order to further understand the basic situation of the Maritime Silk Road Heritage Sites in each city, the expert group of China World Cultural Heritage Protection Center of China Cultural Heritage Research Institute investigated five Maritime Silk Road Heritage Sites around Huanghua, Dongying, Penglai, Weihai and Lianyungang. In our city, the experts and their team have investigated on-the-spot the Heritage Sites of the Maritime Silk Road, such as Cliff Inscriptions of Kongwang Mountain, Haiqing Temple Pagoda, Earth-sealed Stone Chamber Tomb, Boundary Stone Carvings of Langya County in Donghai, and visited the City Museum.

At the meeting, the cities around the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea introduced the reality, progress and future work plan of the historical sites of the Maritime Silk Road Heritage. Our City focuses on the introduction of Cliff Inscriptions of Kongwang Mountain and other related heritage sites, which attracted the attention of experts attending the meeting. The expert group affirmed the working meeting of the region around the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, believed that it was an innovation of the working mechanism of application for heritage, and provided a reference for the formation of regional cooperation among other cities.

It was pointed out that the declaration of the World Cultural Heritage for the Maritime Silk Road is a systematic project with strong professionalism and technicality, spanning two dimensions of time and space. All localities should further study the Convention for the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, strengthen the study of the norms and standards for the declaration of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, further develop it from the perspective of all mankind and explore the value and connotation of heritage.

The meeting emphasized that the declaration of world cultural heritage focuses on the authenticity and integrity of heritage sites. According to the investigation and the actual application of the Maritime Silk Road heritage, there are imbalances and complexities in the application in the cities around the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, and the correlation among heritage sites is not obvious. Further work is needed. Firstly, we should accurately match the targets and strengthen basic work research. We should not only pay attention to theoretical knowledge, but also carry out cultural relics surveying and mapping, archaeological exploration, and in-depth interpretation of the value of the Maritime Silk Road heritage itself. Secondly, we should expand time and space, in a longer time and a larger regional scope, to study the relationship between the points and the sea. In addition, we should continue to strengthen cooperation in submarine and multi-regional Maritime Silk Road heritage applications, strengthen communication and exchanges, share work experience, draw lessons from each other, learn from others’ strengths, open up ideas and form a joint force.

It is reported that according to the overall progress of the Maritime Silk Road application and needs, in August, the China World Cultural Heritage Center of the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage will give feedback to the cities around the Bohai Sea on the investigation report and the list of basic information needed; from September to October, the city will carry out relevant archaeological and research projects based on expert feedback.
