Lianyungang Port’s northern and southern wings have recently welcomed two major developments in quick succession, delivering a dual boost to the port’s functionality and openness to the outside world.
The Jiangsu Provincial Department of Commerce has officially approved the temporary opening of Berth 173, a 300,000-tonne crude oil terminal at the Sixth Harbor Basin of the Xuwei Port Area, marking a further enhancement of the port’s crude oil receiving capacity on its southern wing. The berth occupies a total shoreline length of 412 metres, with a designed receiving capacity of 18.6 million tonnes. Upon its temporary opening, the berth will effectively secure the imported crude oil demand of refining and petrochemical enterprises along the Yangtze River and at the Lianyungang Petrochemical Base. It will also link efficiently with the Yangtze River Delta crude oil pipeline network of the national pipeline grid, collectively improving the security and layout rationality of the foreign trade crude oil supply system in the Yangtze River region.
In a separate development, on the morning of 29 April, the Provincial Department of Commerce organized a provincial-level inspection and acceptance meeting for the opening of Berths 205–207 at the Ganyu Port Area of Lianyungang Port. The inspection team conducted an on-site visit to the wharf, examining customs technical facilities, a maritime anti-pollution material warehouse, video surveillance systems, a pre-positioned interception operation zone, an inspection platform, and related port supporting infrastructure. The team also heard a report from Xinhaiwan Wharf Company on the port’s preparations for opening.
After a comprehensive review, the inspection team unanimously concluded that the three berths had completed the construction of power supply, water supply, firefighting, monitoring systems, and other required facilities in accordance with standards, and were fully qualified for official opening. Provincial-level acceptance was approved.
Once officially opened, the berths will effectively close the gap in foreign trade berthing capacity on the northern wing, significantly boost international vessel turnaround efficiency, and provide a solid guarantee for the smooth operation of the Belt and Road cross-border logistics corridor and the security and stability of international supply chains. The opening will further refine the overall port-opening layout of Lianyungang Port, comprehensively improve the berthing and operational conditions for foreign trade vessels at the Ganyu Port Area, and continue to strengthen the port’s comprehensive service capabilities.
