Key Breakthrough Made in National Major Energy Project: Storage Tank of Jiangsu Huadian Ganyu LNG Terminal Completes Pneumatic Lifting

On December 19, the Jiangsu Huadian Ganyu LNG Terminal project achieved a key construction milestone with the successful pneumatic lifting operation of the No. 2 storage tank. This marks another significant advancement in China’s independent construction capabilities for clean energy storage and transportation facilities, providing strong support for energy security and green transformation in the Yangtze River Delta region.
“Pneumatic lifting is one of the most technically challenging core processes in LNG storage tank construction. The No. 2 storage tank that has just been lifted features an arch roof with a diameter of 88 meters, weighing over 900 tons and rising to a height of nearly 43 meters, covering an area equivalent to a standard football field,” explained Hu, the project manager from China Nuclear Industry Fifth Construction Co., Ltd. for the Jiangsu Huadian Ganyu LNG Terminal. “We successfully elevated this nearly thousand-ton ‘steel dome’ to a high altitude, relying primarily on key technologies with completely independent intellectual property rights in China, including the national-level ‘Construction Method for Pneumatic Lifting of Arch Roofs of Large-scale Low-temperature Storage Tanks’ and the ‘Construction Process and Balance Guidance Device Patent for Pneumatic Lifting of Arch Roofs of Large-scale Low-temperature Storage Tanks’. Notably, this is also the first implementation in Jiangsu of an advanced fully automated measurement and control system for pneumatic lifting of large storage tank arch roofs, enabling lifting operations to be as precise and controllable as an aircraft’s ‘auto-cruise’ mode. Through real-time monitoring and adjustments via sensors, we achieved ultra-high precision with horizontal deviations not exceeding one ten-thousandth and rotational deviations less than 0.01 degrees, significantly enhancing the safety factor, engineering quality, and construction efficiency of storage tank construction, with the overall technology reaching an internationally leading level.”
The Ganyu LNG Terminal is a strategic layout by Jiangsu Province to enhance natural gas supply capacity and optimize its energy structure. Three large-scale storage tanks are planned to be constructed in the project, and upon full operation, they will be capable of transmitting 4.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, meeting the annual gas demand of 20 million households. “Upon full operation, the project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 30 million tons annually, equivalent to planting 80 million trees. This will effectively strengthen the security barrier for natural gas supply in the East China region, enhance supply reliability, and inject substantial momentum into the realization of the ‘dual carbon’ goals,” introduced Shi, the general manager of Jiangsu Huadian Ganyu Liquefied Natural Gas Co., Ltd. Additionally, the project will directly drive the coordinated development of upstream and downstream industries such as ports, shipping, engineering construction, and equipment manufacturing, providing stable clean energy support for key industries such as petrochemicals in the Ganyu port-adjacent industrial zone, and helping Lianyungang build a hundred-billion-yuan industrial cluster.
With the first storage tank now transitioning to the internal tank installation phase, the Ganyu LNG Terminal project is steadily progressing towards its 2027 commissioning goal. As a “national treasure” safeguarding national energy security, the project will further weave a denser national natural gas “network”, providing solid support for promoting clean energy transformation and achieving the “dual carbon” goals.
