Lianyungang Port’s Northern Wing Sees Major Capacity Upgrade as Two 100,000-Ton Giant Vessels Berth Simultaneously for First Time

Against a surging tide, the Ganyu Port Area buzzed with activity as the London Warrior, a 100,000-ton iron ore carrier, and the Scythia, a crude oil tanker, were carefully maneuvered by tugboats and secured at Berths 205 and 201 respectively. On the dock, towering cranes stood in formation while mooring crews deftly fastened thick hawsers to bollards, the two giant vessels moored side by side. This marks the first time Ganyu Port Area has accommodated two 100,000-ton ships during a single tidal window, signaling a systematic upgrade in the waterway capacity and berth bearing capacity of Lianyungang Port’s northern wing.

The Scythia, berthed at Berth 201, is a hazardous chemical crude oil tanker subject to strict navigational levels, water area controls, berthing separation requirements, and operational protection standards. The London Warrior, at Berth 205, is fully loaded with imported iron ore—its deep draft and heavy cargo placing high demands on berthing precision and unloading continuity. With intersecting entry routes and a tight scheduling window, the operation presented a high-density, large-tonnage continuous navigation test for Ganyu Port Area’s main channel.

“We made full use of the limited tidal window and developed a specialized ‘dual-berth, dual-cargo’ operation plan in advance,” said Zhu, General Manager of Lianyungang Xinhaiwan Terminal Co., Ltd. “We conducted separate safety technical briefings for enclosed crude oil unloading and rapid iron ore discharge, with dedicated personnel on each post working in orderly coordination to ensure both operations proceeded efficiently and safely.” Meanwhile, under the overall coordination of the municipal transportation bureau, various port inspection units operated with high efficiency and clear division of labor. Government and enterprise sides achieved real-time information sharing and direct command delivery, jointly building a full-process closed-loop guarantee system that ultimately delivered “zero-delay” safe berthing for both vessels.

The successful implementation of “two giant ships, one tide” has significantly improved the utilization rate of Ganyu’s waterway resources and vessel turnover rates, accumulating valuable experience for the regular, efficient navigation of large vessels going forward. It stands as a powerful testament to the maturity and effectiveness of Lianyungang Port’s joint port inspection mechanism, and represents a landmark achievement in the upgrading of Xinhaiwan Terminal’s berthing capacity, multi-cargo collaborative organization, and bulk commodity transshipment efficiency.

Moving forward, Ganyu Port Area will continue to deepen cross-agency coordination, continuously optimize the entire operational workflow from vessel scheduling and berthing organization to loading/unloading and transshipment, and further tap the potential of its waterways and berths. The port aims to elevate its role as a bulk cargo transshipment hub, streamline land-sea combined transport logistics channels, and provide more efficient, safer, and higher-quality operational support to fully underpin the high-quality development of port-adjacent industries and the regional economy.
