Container Throughput of River-Sea Intermodal Transport Achieves Annual Target Ahead of Schedule

The establishment of a seamlessly connected river-sea intermodal transport hub system has been a crucial task in recent years for our province's efforts to create a more distinctive "Water Transport Jiangsu" and build a modern transportation demonstration area. This year, our city has further promoted the optimization and adjustment of the transportation structure, accelerating the construction of an efficient thousand-ton channel network and a robust inland port layout, writing a new chapter in river-sea intermodal transport. As of now, the city's river-sea intermodal container throughput has surpassed 55,000 TEUs, representing a 20% year-on-year increase and achieving the annual target ahead of schedule.

The growth in intermodal transport volume is closely linked to the active collaboration and joint efforts of port and shipping entities in ensuring smooth operations. This year, the city's transportation department seized the opportunity presented by the "Water Transport Jiangsu" initiative, establishing a river-sea intermodal transport service support task force and convening six meetings to coordinate and ensure the entire process of river-sea intermodal transport. The Port and Waterway Center of the City Transportation Bureau introduced 20 measures to support river-sea intermodal transport, leveraging the joint mechanism of transportation and water conservancy to enhance cooperation with cross-regional departments such as those in Huaian, effectively addressing the challenges posed by dry seasons and flood seasons, and significantly improving the annual navigation reliability.

The Port Holding Group established a dedicated river-sea intermodal transport working group, centered around the market development concept of "being coastal by being riverside, and being at the forefront by being inland". It continuously strengthened the function of the river-sea intermodal transport hub platform, vigorously promoted the extension of seaport functions and the integration of river-sea markets, actively attracted new entities to participate in development, innovatively introduced various combined transport modes such as "river-sea intermodal transport +", and focused on developing premium routes to Huaian, Xuzhou, and Suqian. The river-sea intermodal transport system and market network have become increasingly sophisticated, with the goal of reaching 60,000 TEUs by the end of the year.

In alignment with the Implementation Plan for Accelerating the Distinctive "Water Transport Jiangsu" Initiative in Lianyungang issued by the Municipal Government Office in January of this year, by 2025, Lianyungang's river-sea intermodal transport system, with a focus on container transportation, will efficiently cover the inland river network areas. The annual throughput of inland river ports will exceed 30 million tons, the annual throughput of river-sea intermodal cargo will surpass 25 million tons, and the annual throughput of inland river containers will break through 60,000 TEU.

The anticipated goals are "within reach as we act", and the port and navigation units across the city continue to strive diligently without pause. Currently, Lianyungang Port is deepening its business cooperation with the inland river port cluster along the northern route of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, actively seeking cargo sources from markets north of the Longhai Railway and along the Watang-Rizhao Railway. The "river-sea intermodal transport + new corridor" business has become an important means to strengthen supply chain connectivity and complementarity within a broader scope.
