Poplar and willow flocculation inhibition test has achieved initial success in our city; "flying catkins obscuring the sky" is expected to be alleviated.

Every year at the turn of spring and summer, willow catkins and poplar catkins will flutter in the sky, which not only affects the landscape environment of urban and rural roads, but also troubles the general public. Last May, the municipal Housing and Construction Department invited the professional prevention and control personnel from Sichuan to select willow and poplar trees in Cangwu Green Park and Yuzhou Park to carry out flocculation inhibition pilot tests respectively.

According to reports, the prevention and control personnel have different principles to suppress catkins flocculation in the two test sites. In Cangwu Green Park, the staff selected chemical treatment method to treat willow and poplar trunks through “injection” to inhibit estrogen in female plants and inhibit their germination and differentiation, so that trees will focus on leaf growth. Stimulating female plants to blossom less or not can achieve the goal of reducing the next year's flocculation. The other is a physical method, which is used to test poplar trees in Yuzhou Park. The preventive and control personnel use natural degradable, liquid-type fly-floc inhibitors with the help of sprinkler high-pressure water gun or fog gun truck to spray directly on the surface of trees. By capturing, adsorbing and agglomerating flocs, they lock them in the mesh structure and play the role of wetting, bonding and fixing flocs. This method achieved the purpose of fixing fly-flocs last year, but the experiment was only carried out locally.

In Cangwu Green Park, the journalist found that six willows in the pilot experiment of flocculation suppression last year had already sprouted, but the earing rate was significantly lower than that of the oak willow, and 10 poplars in the experiment also had fewer ears. The spike rate of willow and poplar, both male and female, decreased significantly after using the medicine. The technology will not affect the growth of trees, but can restrain flocculation while making the growth of trees more flourishing. The main phytogenic pollution in our city is the flying flocs produced by female poplar and willow trees. Poplars and willows belong to fast-growing native tree species with fast shading and good greening effect. There are a large number of plantations in urban and rural areas of our city. Cangwu Green Park and Yuzhou Park have more plantations of them in urban areas. Chaoyang East Road and Xingang City Avenue are also partly planted with the trees. According to the working staff in charge of the municipal housing construction department, our city will follow up and study the effect of the test. If the results of the two parks test are obvious, poplar and willow trees in the main sections of urban areas can be gradually promoted and harnessed in recent years. At the same time, we need to increase the observation density, do a good job of the effect tracking and gradually promote the use of the test in the whole city, so as to gradually solve the problems caused by willow and poplar catkins.

In addition to artificial control of flying flocs, relevant departments have considered replacing green tree species. At the same time, landscape experts also carried out "birth control" on part of Ligustrum lucidum at Yingzhou South Road last year, that is, to reduce the pollution of its mature purple and black seeds on the road surface through the use of inhibitors.
