Lianyungang City Becomes Global Hub for “Overseas New Year Goods”

awater inside. These “fresh visitors” from across the ocean are making their way from the coast of the Yellow Sea to dining tables across the country through a new model combining “bonded warehousing, live seafood holding, and e-commerce direct sales”.

As the first international live seafood bonded hub in Jiangsu Province and an important one in East China, the Lianyungang Port plays a pivotal role in the global procurement and sales of “overseas New Year goods” during this Spring Festival. Data from Tmall Global shows that New Year goods from over 100 countries and regions are being assembled through various ports in China, and Lianyungang, relying on its unique live seafood bonded functions, has become a key node for high-end live seafood to enter East China and radiate across the country.

Stepping into the precisely temperature-controlled bonded holding warehouse is like entering a mini aquarium. Technicians are closely monitoring various water quality indicators. “We simulate the original deep-sea environment to allow the live seafood, which has undergone long-distance transportation, to ‘recover’ here and reach the best quality for market sale,” explained a center official. Through an efficient chain of “port clearance—bonded holding—order fulfillment”, an Irish oyster can reach consumers in as little as 36 hours from leaving the shore, significantly shorter than the time required in traditional trade processes, with freshness comparable to that of “freshly caught and delivered”.

Behind this “fresh and fast” service lies Lianyungang’s continuous innovation in cross-border e-commerce and bonded business formats. By the end of 2025, the center had completed facility upgrades and became Tmall Global’s first live seafood cross-border fulfillment warehouse. From the trial operation of Canadian cooked frozen Arctic sweet shrimp to the regular warehousing of Irish oysters, the entire process was streamlined in just a few months.

As the Spring Festival approaches, the pace of stockpiling has noticeably picked up. In addition to Canadian lobsters, a batch of Norwegian king crabs arrived in the port city on the night of the 12th, further enriching the pre-festival supply. The globally selected live seafood is reaching thousands of households directly through e-commerce platforms. Leveraging the “bonded warehousing, live seafood holding, and e-commerce direct sales” model, the Lianyungang International Live Seafood Bonded Distribution Center not only facilitates the efficient entry of high-quality overseas live seafood into the domestic market, but also injects new impetus into the development of the local port economy and cross-border e-commerce.

“In the past, there were limited options and many concerns when buying imported live seafood. Now, I can place an order today and receive oysters still filtering seawater tomorrow. It feels like the world’s best seafood is right at my doorstep,” wrote a consumer in the store’s review section. This Spring Festival, more and more “overseas New Year goods” are making their way vividly onto dining tables across the country, powered by digital and logistics networks.
