“Three-Pronged Approach” Launched for Second-Grade Waterway Construction in Our City

Recently, good news has emerged regarding the waterway network construction in our city: The feasibility study reports for the Lianyun Port Area Dredging Waterway Renovation Project and the Second-Grade Waterway Renovation Project of the Suqian-Lianyungang Waterway (Lianyungang Section) have successively received formal approval from the Jiangsu Provincial Development and Reform Commission. This marks a substantial breakthrough in the construction of a high-grade waterway network and the enhancement of sea-river combined transportation functions in our city. It also accelerates the comprehensive construction of the city’s second-grade waterway network. Currently, the Dredging Waterway Renovation Project in Xuwei Port Area is being steadily implemented. With the addition of these two newly approved projects, a new pattern of “three-pronged approach” has taken shape in our city's second-grade waterway construction, further enhancing the port’s collection and distribution capacity and the regional waterway transportation capacity.
It is understood that the Lianyun Port Area Dredging Waterway Renovation Project starts at the intersection of the Suqian-Lianyungang Waterway and the Yanhe River and ends at the Zhongyuntai Operation Area, with a total length of approximately 32.5 kilometers. The entire waterway will be constructed to the standards of a second-grade waterway, with a designed bottom width of no less than 60 meters, a navigable water depth of no less than 4 meters, and a bending radius of no less than 360 meters. The project includes the construction of one new Yunshan Double-Line ship lock, as well as the synchronous construction of supporting facilities such as service areas, information systems, and navigation aids. The estimated investment for the project is about 3.42 billion yuan, with a construction period of 4 years.
The Second-Grade Waterway Renovation Project of the Suqian-Lianyungang Waterway (Lianyungang Section) starts at the border between Lianyungang and Suqian cities and ends at the confluence of the Suqian-Lianyungang Waterway and the Yanhe River, with a total length of 22.2 kilometers. It also adheres to the standards of a second-grade waterway, with a designed bottom width of no less than 60 meters, a navigable water depth of no less than 4 meters, and a bending radius of no less than 320 meters. This project mainly involves the implementation of waterway revetment, dredging works, and the reconstruction of the Shanhou River culvert, among others. The estimated investment is about 1.05 billion yuan, with a planned construction period of 30 months.
Upon completion, these two major projects will effectively connect the horizontal and vertical water transportation channels in Lianyungang, significantly improving the efficiency of sea-river combined transportation and further optimizing the structure of the provincial waterway network and the transportation service system. It is expected to substantially drive cost reduction and efficiency improvement in logistics along the route, strengthen the port’s radiating effect on the hinterland economy, and inject new impetus into the construction of Lianyungang as an international hub seaport and the high-quality development of “Water Transportation in Jiangsu”. In the next step, the Lianyungang Port and Shipping Affairs Development Center will accelerate subsequent work such as preliminary design and land use approval, further optimize the project plans, strengthen the guarantee of various elements, and strive to commence substantial construction of the projects in 2026, so as to bring into play the comprehensive benefits of the projects at an early date.
