Profile of Lianyungang

Lianyungang is situated between 34o12'
and 35o07' north latitude and 118 o 24' and
119 o 48' east longitude. Located in the
middle of China east coast, and in the
northeast of Jiangsu Province, Lianyungang
has a total land area of 7,444 square
kilometers and water area of 1759.4 square
kilometers. It faces Lian Island, backs on
Yuntai Mountain and embraces a port, which
is the origin of its name. The length from
east to west is about 129 kilometers and is
132 kilometers from south to north. With a
population of 4,688,100, Lianyungang
administers four counties and three
prefectures, namely Donghai, Ganyu, Guanyun
and Guannan counties and Xinpu, Haizhou and
Lianyun prefectures, as well as one state
level economic and technological development
zone. As one of the first 14 coastal cities
opening to the outside world, Lianyungang
has predominant location and enormous
development potential, aiming to become a
regional international business center, a
beautiful tourist city, a modern
communications hub and an international
harbor city.

One of Ten Harbor Cities in
China
Lianyungang Port is one
of ten largest ports in China. It is the eastern
bridgehead of the New Eurasia Continental Bridge
(NECB). Lianyungang is a natural ideal port,
since it is non-freezing, not silty, deep enough
and able to shelter from wind. The port has
established navigation relationship with almost
1,000 ports in over 160 countries and regions.
The completion of the 6.7 kilometers of long
causeway made the port form a broad peaceful
water area of 30 square kilometers, which is
spacious to build up over 100 berths with
throughput capacity of ten thousand tons. By the
time of 2008, its annual throughput is expected
to exceed 0.1 billion tons and the amount of
container transport to reach 3 million TEUs. So
the port will become a comprehensive port for
international trade specializing in export
transport. |

One of the First
Coastal Cities Opening to the Outside
World
Lianyungang is one
of the first 14 coastal cities opening
to the outside world in China. In recent
years, Lianyungang is actively
implementing the main strategy of "open
up the city to rebound economy" so as to
adapt to the new situations with the
entry into WTO. Many world famous
companies have invested here, such as
Dupont of USA, LG of South Korea,
Mitsubishi of Japan and Roquette of
France (the largest producer of sorbitol
in the world). Many world famous
multinational companies like AJINOMOTO
of Japan, Kabool of Korea , Yihai Grain
& Oil and container projects have also
been introduced. All of the
above-mentioned projects stimulated the
breakthrough of near-port industry in
Lianyungang. |

A Rising Industrial City
Recently, Lianyungang's
industrial economy has been increasing rapidly
and it has formed five pillar industries
including pharmacy, chemical, textile, foods and
building materials. The overall operation
quality of enterprises is quite high and the
comprehensive economic benefit index is 141.7%,
15.8 % higher than the same period of last year.
It rates number three among 13 cities of Jiangsu
Province and number one among 5 cities of North
Jiangsu. |

A Beautiful
Tourist City
With mountains
meeting the sea and islands facing the
port, Lianyungang is surrounded by
mountains, people are strolling around
the beach , all of which display unique
urban scenery and landscape. Lianyungang
is one of China 49 most important
tourist cities and one of 3 main tourist
areas in Jiangsu Province. It has 20
tourist areas and 120 scenic spots,
which entertained 6.13 million tourists
in 2004 with a total tourism income
reaching RMB 5.252 billion. A tourist
may find in Lianyungang the famous
mountain (Flower & Fruit Mountain),
famous sea (Yellow Sea), famous water
(Donghai Hot Spring), famous bamboo
(Gold-Gilded Jade bamboo), famous stone
(crystal), famous books (Pilgrimage to
the West, flowers in the mirrors),
famous "air" (best air quality in China)
and famous well (first well in Asia).
Mountains, seas, islands and ports bring
out the best urban scenery in each
other. In 2002, the Flower & Fruit
Mountain and Lian Islands (Connected
islands) Tourism Vacationing Site were
awarded national 4A grade tourism area
successively. They were also granted
model unit of national tourist site and
national healthy seawater bathing place.
In 2003, Kongwang Mountain scenic spot
was appraised national 4A grade tourism
area. In 2004,Yuwan scenic spot was also
appraised national 4A grade tourism
area. Lianyungang is the origin of
Pilgrimage to the West culture. Chairman
Mao mentioned repeatedly, 'The homeland
of Monkey King is Yuntai Mountain in
Xinhailian City.' |

An Important Energy Base
in China
Lianyungang owns the first
class thermal power plant in China with the
installed capacity of 522,500 kw. The two
generating sets with the single-machine capacity
of 330,000 kw are designed to generate
electricity in April and August 2005
respectively; The Tianwan nuclear power station
is to be built with the biggest installed
capacity of single-machine in China. Six
generating sets of 1.06 million kw respectively
are planned to be built up. The total investment
value of the first-phase project is USD 3.2
billion. The two generating sets of 1.06 million
kw respectively will be built in 2005 and 2006
in succession. At that time, Lianyungang is
going to become an important energy base in East
China.
