With the ancient name of “Haizhou”, Lianyungang is rich in historical and cultural relics, and Tenghualuo site is the first prehistoric city site found in China with the structure of internal and external ridges. General Clif Rock (Jiangjunyan) Painting, known as the “Oriental Heavenly Book”, is the oldest rock painting in China. The Kongwangshan cliff stone statues, the art treasures of the Eastern Han Dynasty, are proven to be more than 200 years earlier than the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. Cultural relics such as Ayuwang Pagoda of Haiging Temple for thousands of years show the splendid ancient civilization ofLianyungang.

Lianyungang area is a collection of ancient cultures. Xu Fu, a scholar ofthe Qin Dynasty and a native of Ganyu, crossed to Fusang (Ancient Japan) from here, and was called “the first person of Sino-japanese cultural exchange”. Ling Tingkan, Xu Qiaolin and Xu Guilin, scholars of Qianjia, Qing Dynasty, grew up and lived on this land. Shen Yunpei, who was born in Haizhou in the late Qing Dynasty, was named Youshilang (imperial official rank ) of the Ministry of Posts and Communications set the port of the East Longhai Railway at Haizhou, so that the ancient border town stepped into the door of a modern port city. Since modern times, Wu Tongju, a water conservancy scientist, Jiang Wenyu, a vocational educator, Zhu Ziqing, ar, and Yanhan, a painter, were born in this land. It is also the hometown of seven academicians of the two academies: Wang Dezhao, Wang Dexi, Chen Jiyu, Cheng Jinpei, Dong Jiahong, Xu Hongxing, Xiao Wei.

There are still a great number of historical sites and stories of literati andrs in Liangyungang. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, Confucius made an alliance with the Qi Marquis in Jiagu Mountain in the identity of Lu Xiang, and wrote a good story of turning wars into friendship. Shi Manging and Su Dongpo, the greatrs of the Song Dynasty, wrote dozens of poems related to Haizhou. Wu Cheng-en, ar of the Ming Dynasty, wrote the classic book Journey to the West on the background of Mt Yuntai. Wu Jingzi and Li Ruzhen lived here for a long time, and wrote the literary works The Scholars and Flowers in the Mirror with the living experience here.
