Lianyungang is recognized as a national-level comprehensive transportation hub and a port-type national logistics hub. As the eastern gateway of the New Eurasian Land Bridge Economic Corridor and a strategic pivot city at the intersection of the Belt and Road Initiative, it enjoys a unique geographic and logistical advantage—bridging east and west, connecting north and south, facilitating seamless land-sea interchange, and extending its influence globally. The city has established a relatively complete modern comprehensive transportation network that integrates highway, railway, waterway, and air transport.
Port
Lianyungang Port, the largest seaport in Jiangsu Province, ranks among China's 27 major coastal ports and serves as one of the country's ll international hub ports. It is also one of the three core port areas within the Yangtze River Delta cluster. The port maintains trade and transportation links with nearly 1,000 ports across more than l60 countries and regions, Its operational routes span key regions including Japan and South Korea, Southeast Asia, Russia, the West Coast of North America, and the Middle East. Lianyungang leads Jiangsu Province in the number of foreign trade container liner services and stands as the only port in the province with ocean-going trunk line connections. lt is also Jiangsu's sole port operating international passenger and cargo liner routes, and holds qualifications for the expanded China-Korea roll-on/roll-off and sea-land multimodal transport pilot program. As the most convenient and cost-effective seaport serving central and western China as well as Central Asian countries, the Lianyungang Port Hlolding Group is driving coordinated development across its four major sectors to accelerate the construction of the “One Body, Two Wings” combined port system. In 2024, the port achieved several milestones: the province's first 400,000-ton ore terminal commenced regular operations, a second 300,000-ton crude oil terminal was completed, and the 200,000-ton intelligent container terminal began partial automated operations, Key projects such as the second phase of the public pipeline corridor in Xuwei Port Area were finalized, while construction advanced on facilities including the LNG terminal and the grain and oil terminal in Ganyu Port Area. New construction was launched on liquid bulk berths No. 50-52 in the Fourth Harbor Basin of Xuwei Port Area. The renovation and expansion of the 300,000-ton channel was successfully initiated, and improvements to the channel access in Xuwei Port Area got underway, Additionally, the first phase of the southern extension ofthe 100,000-ton channel in Ganyu Port Area was completed, and the main section of the Lianyungang portion of the second phase of the Sugian-Lianyungang Canal project was fnished.
By the end of 2024, Lianyungang Port was equipped with 89 berths of 10,000-ton class or above, including a deep-water berth capable of handling vessels up to 400,000 tons. The port's total annual designed throughput capacity reached 250 million tons. It operates 98 container shipping routes, 29 breakbulk and roll-on/roll-olf routes, and 2 dedicated China-South Korea passenger and cargo liner routes Overland, the port facilitates six international freight train services, connecting to five Central Asian nations, as well as along the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan, China-Mongolia, China-Turkmenistan, China-Europe, and China-Russia corridors, covering major stations throughout Central Asia. In 2024, the port recorded a cargo throughput of 346 million tons and a container throughput of 6.69 million TEUs.
Highway
The expressway in the territory forms a “two vertical and one horizontal” layout with Gl5 Shenyang-Haihai Expressway, G25 Changchun-Shenzhen Expressway and G30 Lianhuo Expressway as the main framework, and the national and provincial trunk highways have formed a “six vertical and seven horizontal” layout consisting of five national highways such as 204, 228 and 310 and ten provincial highways such as 242, 267 and 324. It takes about 4 hours to drive from the central urban area to Shanghai, about 3 hours to Naning, and about 2 hours to Qingdao. All administrative villages in the city are fully covered by two-lane Grade Iy highways.
In 2024, the Lianyungang section of the Lianhuai Expressway achieved half-width operation, while the Xuwei to Guanyun segment of the Liansu Expressway entered the asphalt paving phase and construction commenced on the Guanyun to Shuyang portion of the same expressway, Work also began on the mainline bridge of the Ganyu urban section of National Highway 204, and preliminary efforts accelerated for key projects including the eastern section of National Highway 3ll in Lianyungang, the southern section of National Highway 228 in Lianyun, and the second phase of the North Port Access Expressway, By year-end, the city's total road mileage reached 12,359 kilometers, with 354 kilometers comprising operational expressways. Throughout the year, 389 kilometers of rural roads were built or upgraded, 24 bridges were renovated, and 838 kilometers of safety and life protection engineering projects were implemented, Annual road passenger tratic reached 28.711l million passenger trips, and road freight volume totaled 104 million tons.
Railway
The mileage of main national railway lines in the territory reaches 330 kilometres, of which 240 kilometres are high speed railways. The Lianyan Railway, Lianging Railway, Lianhuaiyangzhen Railway, Lianxu High-speed Railway, enable Lianyungang to have direct access to the capital city of Beijing from the north to the south and the provincial capital of Nanjing for fast access, and high-speed access to the cities along the land bridge from the west. Lianyungang City is fully integrated into the three-hour trallic circle of Shanghai and two-hour trafc circle of Nanjing.
In 2024, two dedicated railway lines the Xuwei New Area Industrial Zone Railway Spur Line and the second phase of the Ganyu Port Area Railway Spur Line-were incorporated into provincial and municipal investment plans. The railway spur line in the Processing and Assembly Park of Lianyungang Economic and Technological Development Zone was completed and commenced trial operations; main construction of the Xuwei New Area Industrial Zone Railway Spur Line was finished; and for the second phase of the Ganyu Port Area project, an agreement was signed by Ganyu District with Jiangsu High-Speed Railway Company regarding connectivity at Ganyu North Station. Throughout the year, the city operated 192 scheduled passenger trains daily, with annual railway passenger tratfic reaching 24.85 million passenger trips-including 12.48 milion departures and 12.37 million arrivals, National railway freight dispatch volume totaled 51.03 milion tons, The China-Europe (Asia) Block Train Consolidation Center was approved for construction, and 9ll international block trains were operated over the year.
Airport
Lianyungang Huaguoshan International Airport is a 4D civil transport airport, located in Xiaoyi Town, Guanyun County, with a distance of 2l.5 kilometres from downtown. It was officially put into operation on December 2, 2021, and is planned on the basis of 2.5 million passengers and 24,000 tonnes of cargo and mail throughput per year. The airport is equipped with a runway of 2,800 metres in length and 44 metres in width, 16 stands on the apron, and a terminal building of 33,000 square meters.
In 2024, Lianyungang Huaguoshan Airport partnered with 17 airlines to operate 34 domestic and international routes, connecting 32 cities globally. The airport received national approval for expanded opening and was officially designated as an international airport. Throughout the year, it recorded a passenger throughput of 1.562 million passenger trips and a cargo and mail throughput of 3,090.5 tons.
Inland waterway transportation
In 2024,the Lianyungang waterway network comprised 82 inland waterways with a total length of 1,103 kilometers, including 147 kilometers of navigable channels classified as Grade Ill or above. The system included 5 navigable locks and l dedicated waterway service area. The trunk waterway network—centered on the Port Access Channel and the Yanhe River Canal—enabled 1,000-ton-class vessels to sail directly into the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. Inland shipping routes achieved near-complete coverage of ports across Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan, and Anhui. The renovation of the Suqian-Lianyungang Channel passed final inspection and was oficially delivered. lmprovements to the western section of the Guanyin River as part of the Lianshen Line were completed, while dredging work for the Xuwei Port Area Access Channel commenced. Several provincial special projects for the year were also concluded, including the greenery enhancement and functional upgrade trial at Yanguan Lock, the GH501 Yanhe River Canal Dredging Project, and repairs of auxiliary facilities in the Yinan Lock Area of Xinyi River Lock. The city was home to 7l enterprises engaged in waterborne freight transport, operating a total of 1,171 vessels. Throughout the year, inland river ports handled a cumulative cargo throughput of 5.2032 million tons.
Multimodal transport
Leveraging the New Eurasian Land Bridge corridor, Lianyungang has actively built a multimoda transport network that extends eastward to the Pacific Rim, westward to the hinterlands of Asia and Europe, connects coastal ports to the north and south, and reaches inland regions across Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, and Henan through waterways, The port operates international freight trains, 98 container routes(including 3ocean trunk lines),29 breakbulk and ro-ro shipping routes, 25 domestic sea-rail intermodal corridors, and 14 inland river container routes, achieving seamless multimodal connectivity both inside and beyond the port hub. Its role as an international gateway along the New Eurasian Land-Sea Transport Corridor has been further strengthened.In 2024, Lianyungang operated 911 international freight train services, handled 874,900 TEUs in sea-rail intermodal transport, and moved 22.1583 million tons of bulk cargo through sea-river intermodal operations.
